Who We Are

Inspiration

We were inspired by one of the 20th Century greatest engineers who designed most of New York long span bridges. Othmar Ammann was a great engineer graduated from ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in 1902 along with Albert Einstein. Mr. Ammann wrote a report in 1907 about the collapse of Quebec Bridge and in 1940 another report about the collapse of the Tacoma Narrow Bridge (Galloping Gertie). These two reports guided the next half century of suspension bridge design. The first report paved the way for his first bridge design of the North River Bridge over the Hudson River. Mr. Ammann designed the George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Triborough Bridge, Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Delaware Memorial Bridge, Walt Whitman Bridge, Verrazzano-Narrow Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Golden Gate Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge and others.

History

Magdy Ghaly, CEO of Ammann & Whitney Professional Engineering started his engineering study at Alexandria University of Engineering where he completed 4 years of the university Bachelor’s Degree program, Mr. Ghaly then immigrated to the USA and continued his education at City University of the City College (CCNY) and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Mr. Ghaly started working on major construction projects including NYCDOT bridge painting, NYCDDC watermain and sewers, NYCDOT bridge rehabilitation, MTA Triborough Bridges and Tunnels, Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Bridge, Marine Parkway Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, NYSDOT Major Construction Projects, Kew Gardens Interchange, Reconstruction of I-84 from PA State Line to CT State Line, Reconstruction of Route 17, Rehabilitation of Williamsburg Bridge and rehabilitation of NYCDOT Movable Bridges, Pulaski Bridge and Madison Avenue Bridge. Mr. Ghaly was inspired to continue his education while working fulltime, in 2009 Mr. Ghaly earned his Master’s degree from Columbia University and in 2016 Mr. Ghaly earned his Geotechnical doctoral degree from Columbia University as well.

Mission

The long history of education, degrees and working on major construction projects enabled Mr. Ghaly to climb through the ladder starting as an inspector, office engineer, resident engineer, project manager and CEO. These 30 years of experience allowed Mr. Ghaly to notice the flaws that industry is currently facing. Ammann & Whitney is committed to have a positive impact on the industry to continue the way that our great inspiration started and lead a revolution that will shape the engineering industry for the next century.

Sandra is the Ammann & Whitney President. Sandra has a NY & OH PE License. Sandra worked on major City, State & Federal Projects.
